About Lord Mahavira

It is believed that he lived in the 6th or 5th century BCE, was born in 599 BCE, and died in 527 BCE. However, Mahavira's birth date is uncertain.
Mahavira's father was King Siddhartha, and his mother was Queen Trishala. Mahavira was born in Kundagrama, which is located in present-day Bihar or near Bihar in India. It is also believed that they were born in a royal Kshatriya family. Mahavir got married at the age of 30 years, and his wife's name was Yashoda. He became the father of a daughter, Priyadarshana (Anojja).

Lord Mahavir left his home at about the age of 30. He became an ascetic in search of spiritual awakening. Lord Mahavira practiced penance for 12 years. At the age of 42 years, he attains Kevala Jnana. He gained Kevala Jnana, which means complete knowledge, after about twelve and a half years of deep meditation and strict self-discipline. It is said that he did not even wear clothes during his 12 years of ascetic life. He delivered religious discourses for nearly thirty years and taught the path to spiritual liberation.
Teachings of Mahavira
The main teachings of Mahavira are Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truth), asteya (non-stealing), brahmacharya (celibacy), and aparigraha (non-attachment).
