Guru Amardas Ji is the third Guru of the Sikhs. Guru Amar Das Ji's original name was Bhai Amardas. He was born in 1479 in the village of Basarke, district of Amritsar, Punjab. His father was Sri Tej Bhan Ji and his mother was Lakho, Bakht, or Lakhmi Ji. Mansa Devi Ji was his wife. He had two sons named Mohan Ji and Mohri Ji. Guru Amar Das Ji had two daughters named Bibi Dani Ji and Bibi Bhani Ji.

How did Guru Amar Das Ji meet Guru Angad Dev Ji?
Before becoming a Sikh, he was in search of a true Guru. He used to go on religious yatra with many saints. But the thirst of the mind was not quenched. Finally, one day he heard the bani of Guru Nanak Dev Ji from the mouth of his niece's wife, Bibi Amro, which deeply touched his heart. Bibi Amro was the daughter of Guru Angad Dev Ji. Amardas Ji asked her whose sabad she was reciting. Bibi Amro said it was the bani of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, whose gurgaddi heir was now my father, Guru Angad Dev Ji. Hearing this, Amardas asked Bibi Amro to arrange a meeting with his father. Bibi Amro had an important role in Guru Amardas Ji's life in meeting a true Guru.
What service did Guru Amardas Ji perform for Guru Angad Dev Ji?
Guru Angad Dev Ji was younger than Amardas in age. But Guru Amardas Ji performed selfless service for Guru Angad Dev Ji, such as bringing fresh water for bathing in the early morning from the Beas River. Amardas Ji brought firewood from the jungles for the Guru's langar. He helped prepare meals in the communal kitchen. He washed Guru Ji's clothes and followed every order of Guru Angad Dev Ji. Amardas was also called "Amaru Nithava," but he kept serving without caring for anyone. He received gurgaddi in 1552 at the age of 73. In this way, Guru Amardas Ji became the Sikh Guru in 1552. Guru Amardas Ji was the Sikh Guru for 22 years and 5 months.

He further expanded the spread of Sikhism and built the Baoli at Goindwal, along with the expansion of the langar tradition. He ended untouchability in society and also removed practices such as discrimination against women and caste. He selected the land for Darbar Sahib, and he introduced the Manji System along with the Piri System. He also said, "Pehle Pangat Phir Sangat." He was against the Sati practice, which is why he emphasized women's rights and equality. Guru Amar Das Ji started Anand Karaj, which is a Sikh marriage ceremony.
